The imposing Victorian exterior of Crumlin Road Gaol against a cloudy sky

Crumlin Road Gaol is one of the most striking buildings in Belfast and a highlight stop on the City Sightseeing route. Known locally as "The Crum," this Victorian-era prison housed suffragettes, loyalist and republican prisoners, and ordinary criminals for 150 years.

The Tour Experience

When you hop off here, you can take a guided or self-guided audio tour. The atmosphere is palpable.

Highlights:

  • The Tunnel: Walk the underground tunnel connecting the Gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse across the street. Thousands of prisoners made this journey to hear their fate.
  • The C-Wing: See the conditions prisoners lived in.
  • The Condemned Man’s Cell: A chilling look at the final days of those sentenced to death.
  • The Execution Chamber: The Gaol saw 17 executions in its history.

Why it Fits the Bus Tour

It’s located slightly out of the city center, making the bus the perfect way to get there without navigating public transport maps. The bus stops right outside the massive black gates.
